Comfort - saddle, bars, pedals

When it comes to riding a mechanical contraption we need to adapt the machine to meet the needs of the rider. The three places that can adapt and affect comfort are the handlebars, saddle and pedals. There are several ways to notice that something needs to change. There can be numbness, a crick in the neck or pain in various places. Most times an adjustment of the fit of the bike will help if not solve the problem. Sometimes the size of the frame is the problem. If you've got medical issues, the solution may be a special bike like a recumbent or upright bike.

In this article I'm covering the options that are simplest. These options will cost nothing but time if you have tools or a few dollars if you take it to a shop.

The saddle

Most bike seats or saddles slide forward and back. You loosen the adjustment bolt and the seat will adjust position. This is a fairly minor adjustment but in combination with the other two areas it can contribute to overall comfort.

The pedals/seat height

When people are new to cycling there is a bit of fear in balancing a bicycle. We want to be close to the ground. Hence, we often lower the seat so that we're not so far from the ground. Then, if we fall, we won't hurt ourselves. This is great if you're a toddler. I recommend it. If you're not a toddler you want to keep in mind that your leg muscles are most effective when extended fully. Bent double a leg muscle gets probably a tenth of the power out of your leg. When we come to a hill on a traditional bicycle, we often find ourselves rising out of the saddle to power up the hill. That is an example of our intuitive response as kids. We know that standing up gives us power. As an adult we may need to relearn that. In lieu of always standing up to get power we can adjust the seat height which will allow our legs to extend fully without getting out of the saddle.

With the proper frame size the seat height makes all the difference. It allows me to overcome most hills without leaving the saddle. Staying in the saddle also gives more stability to the ride. The adjustment of seat height is made by the bolt at the seat post at the top of the frame. You can look it up on youtube. I recommend the higher the better. You'll have to get used to it. I recommend practicing the new height for a while around your neighborhood. As you approach a stopping point come down from the saddle before the stop and stabilize. After a while this will become automatic.

Handlebars

There are two ways to adjust the handlebar position - forward and back is one method to adjust for comfort while up and down is another. There is lots of flexibility in adjusting the handlebar position. The stem rises from the frame and supports the bars. There are actually two parts: the stem and the stem extension. The stem adjusts vertical and the stem extension is available in different lengths.

Sometimes when the bike frame is a little short we can raise the handlebars to create a comfortable ride. I usually prefer a saddle height equal to the bar height. Some might find it better is the handlebar is higher than the saddle. A lower bar height can also put more body weight on your hands. That can make your hands numb or have other adverse effects.

When the bike frame is a little small you can adjust the handlebar forward by installing a longer stem extension on the frame. There is another option available to raise the bar position. There is a stem riser you can buy that will extend the vertical height of the bar position.

Overall, these different options give you a lot of latitude in adjusting the bike to your body. If any of the three options is out of adjustment to your body, you may experience numbness in hands or feet, joint or nerve pain or neck pain. The saddle does not have to be padded. A saddle that has too much padding can cause chafing between your legs. That is not a happy experience. I find an equal balance of weight distributed between the saddle, bars and pedals makes a world of difference in enjoying a ride.

In 57 years of riding I've never had a horrific accident. It would be hard to get back on for me. It seems no amount of precautions will protect you. You just have to do what you can and enjoy the ride. Where are you located? Some areas and some routes are less safe. Maybe you need to change your route. Most of my riding has been in the DC area which has crazy traffic but a vocal and responsive cycling community. The community helps insure that there is a minimum awareness. That's one of the legacies we can leave behind. Awareness is a big factor in safety. So many cagers respond that they "didn't see" the cyclist. Most likely they weren't looking or aware. We can always blame the cell phones now, but it's always been the case. Someone will be fiddling with the radio, putting on makeup, reaching for a cigarette. It's not the gadget it's the lack of respect for the ton of vehicle that they're commanding

Haiku bombs

Little bubbles fly
Sending breath from childlike lips
Wishing on the wind

In the back of my mind I developed this belief that when there is a big loud storm with thunder and lightning that the gates of heaven are opening to allow a saint entrance.  Dottie passed away while I was vacationing in China.   There was a storm with thunder and lightning in Bejieng. She had such a prolific voice. Her poetry captured community, communed with nature and evoked us to get involved with life.  She loved simply without complication and her love cast a wide birth.  While walking the land at Dayspring and passing by the Lake of the Saints I felt Dottie's spirit in the wind.  I also greeted others who have gone before me.  Peace of Christ be with you!

Dottie passed bye here
Lingering by gentle pools
Reflecting her love

Embracing arms make
Happiness encounters like
Windblown wild flowers

God's heart is open
The Gentleness of spirit
Engulfs us in love

Me and my mom goofing around with videos.  I love her eyes.  They show a woman still engaged with life but tired.  She is fighting illness yet still makes time for frivolity.  No makeup or coiffed hair.  The beauty of the moment demands a real face.  I love the things I do that are like my mom.  I purse my lips while in deep thot.  I love dogs ridiculously like she does.  I treasure my life as it reflects hers.  Mom you spirit is still with me.  Let’s go for a walk.

Ponder the person
Fragile and broken yet strong
Deeply rooted tree

"Wouldn't take nothin for my journey now..."

I set off to know
From whence I came and dug up
My Identity

A fertile life grows
Deep entrenched in the soil.
Seasoned and enriched

Wash away my pain
Pull me close to your bosom
Sing away the tears

Speak of heart felt blues
Deep as the rich pigments of
Lapis Lazuli

Sunday Mornin

Claiming my journey,
Walking in the shoes of my truth.
Scarred, happy, and strong.

Bird songs wake the day
Its sings three times come and see
New dawns bright sun

God breathed on the Earth.
Leaving snow covered valleys
To seek quiet rest.

Organic love grows.
Wild and free.  Choke not its path
Let love have its way.

Whistling teapot
Come and sip the Chamomile
See my leaves read calm.

My husband thinks I'm going a little crazy counting out words and syllables on my fingers.  He just counted out on his fingers - "I am go-ing to the bath-room"  (Yep, he's on the journey too!)

Dark woman swinging.
Curvy hips swaying in time.
Smooth and Mellow notes

Time for big moon rise!
Popcorn preview at sunset.
Howling starts at eight.

Pack your bags and go.
Eyes forward.  Do not look back.
The pathway is set.

My sister offered a verse of Haiku...

In another world
Listening to the silence
Inner dialogue.

Thank you Tamara, I love your creative spirit!

The love trek...

Steve gave me an unexpected valentine.  We awoke Saturday morning to attend to business in downtown DC and after we finished Steve drove us to the National Gallery of art to replace a broken mug my mom gave me for Christmas.  Instead of us spending the day together he said go have fun.  He dropped me off so that I could trek through the museum alone.  You don't usually think of celebrating a valentine gift alone however I prefer trekking through a museum without him.  I can go where I want when I want and don't have to feel rushed.   Totally loved this!!!  I took in the Art of Byzantium from Greek Collections.  To think these pieces are relics from the time of Constantine dating back to the 4th thru 15th centuries.  It sets my heart a flutter to walk amongst art that is so old.
You are not allowed to take pictures so here is a link.

Journeying Alone
To uncover life's beauty.
Ah, the bliss of it!

A deep hunger to
feed my creativity.
Artistic soul food.

Call ancient spirits.
Offer reliquary gifts.
Old creating new.

Sing deep inside me
Passionate refrains of art.
Lingering sweet songs.

Long looks Green Man's gaze
From autumn to sprouting spring
Spy hints of new life.

My heart is opened
My senses are on fire
Ready, set, leap, fly....

I went to all kinds of places in the museum.  I climbed stairways that lead to nowhere and discovered pieces of sculpture.

I wrote this haiku after gazing on the icon called "Man of Sorrow"

Bowed head, pain closed eyes.
May we display your sorrow
Should we know your grief?

Tired dust soaked feet
Bruised by life's hard thorny path
Yahweh, wash my feet?

It's the end of my day and I am traveling home on the train.  My heart is full.  As Harriet my mother- in-law says:  "My cup runneth over..."

In Yahweh's Light

While a-journeying
I heard your praying heart sing
Songs of peace and rest.

Paula shared with us that while in her room at the retreat center as she was in meditation stink bugs were attracted to the light she was using to journal by.  As they would fly over to her lamp light they would start from the top of a window and make the haphazard journey across the room to the light.  They were quite a nuiscance.  They are really dumb bugs.  They hit the wall or land on her paper and then she would swat them away.   They also would fly into the light only to die from the over exposure to heat.  What she noticed is when they took flighted they were committed.  There was no turning back or no false start.  It was all in.

Dumb is the stink bug.
Committed to winged flight.
Maybe not so dumb?

I'm drawn to your light.
Fixed and transformed in my mind.
Cleansing rays of hope

Loose me from the chains
That block your loving kindness.
Free me to receive.

This is a sunrise on the beach at Assateague State Park in September of 2013.  I left my campsite at 5:30 am to walk the beach and watch the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean.  Glorious!!!
